word-break: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">\u2022<\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">94% of people who consult their D<span style=\"font-size: small;\">octor<\/span> for head pain have MHA.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-left: 0.38in; margin-top: 7.2pt; text-align: left; text-indent: -0.38in; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2022<span style=\"color: black;\">90% of people who consult their D<span style=\"font-size: small;\">octor<\/span> for sinus HA\u2019s actually have MHA<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"direction: ltr; language: en-US; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-left: .38in; margin-top: 7.2pt; mso-line-break-override: none; punctuation-wrap: hanging; text-align: left; text-indent: -.38in; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2022<span style=\"color: black;\">28-33 million people have MHA in the U.S., compared to 32 million who have asthma, Diabetes, and Congestive Heart Disease <\/span><span style=\"color: black;\">combined<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Migraine is consi<span style=\"font-size: small;\">dered a &#8220;primary&#8221; hea<span style=\"font-size: small;\">dache, meaning it is no<span style=\"font-size: small;\">t attribu<span style=\"font-size: small;\">table to any other condition or illness.\u00a0 There are many types and subtypes of MHA.\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">T<\/span>he most common type of MH<span style=\"font-size: small;\">A is Mig<span style=\"font-size: small;\">raine without <span style=\"font-size: small;\">aura (aura <span style=\"font-size: small;\">is a <span style=\"font-size: small;\">set of sensory<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> precursors, such as a smell or flashing li<span style=\"font-size: small;\">ghts in the eyes that the<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> suffere<span style=\"font-size: small;\">r experiences prior<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> to the onset of the <span style=\"font-size: small;\">MHA).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The caus<span style=\"font-size: small;\">al mechanism of MHA is poorly understood.<span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0 Originally<span style=\"font-size: small;\">, <span style=\"font-size: small;\">it was bel<span style=\"font-size: small;\">ieved that <span style=\"font-size: small;\">th<span style=\"font-size: small;\">e cause was vas<span style=\"font-size: small;\">cular, <span style=\"font-size: small;\">probably because of the pulsing quality of the pain.\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: small;\">Research has show<span style=\"font-size: small;\">n th<span style=\"font-size: small;\">at although<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> ther<span style=\"font-size: small;\">e is some change in bloodflow at the <span style=\"font-size: small;\">brainstem (base of the brain, just above the spinal cord in the neck), ther<span style=\"font-size: small;\">e is no<span style=\"font-size: small;\"> change in blood<span style=\"font-size: small;\">fl<span style=\"font-size: small;\">ow within the cortex of the b<span style=\"font-size: small;\">rain or surrounding tissues.\u00a0 Curr<span style=\"font-size: small;\">ent thinking is that <span style=\"font-size: small;\">M<span style=\"font-size: small;\">HA is a <b>neurobiologic<\/b> issue.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> <span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">It is now believed that hyper sensitization of nerve endings within the brain itself are responsible for the initiation of MHA.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> T<\/span><span style=\"color: black;\">hus, attacks originate within the brain.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> The nerves respond first, thereafter affecting blood flow.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: black;\">The brain is not in itself a pain sensitive structure, but it is where the perception of all sensation (including pain) takes place.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">Here are <span style=\"font-size: small;\">a few things that are known:<\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-left: 0.38in; margin-top: 7.68pt; text-align: left; text-indent: -0.38in; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2022<span style=\"color: black;\">Visual changes (aura) result from an electrically charged wave sweeping across the brain surface, followed by decreased charge. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">\u2022<span style=\"color: black;\">The throbbing\/pulsing sensation is due to swelling (inflammation) of the brain\u2019s surface blood vessels and it\u2019s covering (<\/span><span style=\"color: black;\">dura<\/span><span style=\"color: black;\"> mater, meninges)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"direction: ltr; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-left: 0.38in; margin-top: 7.68pt; text-align: left; text-indent: -0.38in; unicode-bidi: embed; word-break: normal;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\">\u2022<span style=\"color: black;\">Hypersensitive nerve endings in the brain result in <\/span><span style=\"color: black;\">allodynia<\/span><span style=\"color: black;\">, or pain resulting from stimulation that is normally non-painful.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: black;\">This <span style=\"font-size: small;\">hypersensitivi<span style=\"font-size: small;\">ty <\/span><\/span>is why sufferers do not want to be touched or talked to while having a migraine.\u00a0 Most prefer a quiet, dark place to rest until the pain passes.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\">T<span style=\"font-size: large;\">REATMENT OPTIONS<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">There are two <span style=\"font-size: small;\">main types of treatment, prophylactic(<span style=\"font-size: small;\">preventative), or abortive(interrupts the MHA).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit;\"><span style=\"color: black;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Prophylactic treatment seeks to prevent the onset of <span style=\"font-size: small;\">MHA.\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: small;\">Some common pro<span style=\"font-size: small;\">phylactic choices inclu<span style=\"font-size: small;\">de:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"direction: ltr;
